patrick: pro tools extraordinaire

August 13, 2007 at 9:31 am (Patrick)

I got my first Pro Tools recording gear this week.

For the 98% of you (I’m not sure how I split 4 readers down into 2% segments, but whatever…) who don’t know what that means, Pro Tools is the professional music recording industry’s standard interface. That means that if you are a band recording your first CD, the software/hardware that the sound engineer is using is almost always Pro Tools.

And I just joined the club.

I picked up an Mbox 2, which is a great little entry-level interface for a guy on a budget. I have a few guitars and keyboards to record into, as well as an SM58 microphone to sing into. My buddy Chase dug out some gear to let me borrow/buy (is that lease-to-own?) as well, including an MXL 2003 condenser mic and a basic microphone pre-amp.

I’m like a kid in a candy store, only I’m 24 and in my own office, and I don’t have shoes that light up when I walk, and I don’t think girls have cooties, oh and also, I don’t have any candy, which sucks because I’m really hungry and I could go for a lolly.

But seriously, it’s flipping sweet. I am starting classes at Berklee Online School of Music very soon, and hopefully I will graduate with a certificate in Pro Tools Sound Engineering sometime in 2009, about the same time I finish my M.A. from Grace Theological Seminary.

As soon as I get some of my original music recorded, I’ll upload it someplace and put a link here for you to download it. Be prepared to be amazed, or incredibly bored.

Because, after all, I am not very good.

patrick: home alone

August 5, 2007 at 3:13 am (Patrick)

Home alone was my favorite movie when I was a kid.

Home alone is not my favorite way to spend a weekend.

Amy is out of town at her folks’ place. And I pretty much haven’t left my bed in two days.

Except to play play piano.

I miss my wife. It sucks being here by myself all the time. I was hoping to just hang out with friends all weekend, but Travis is camping, Billy is in Indy, and Chase is in Valpo. I don’t really have a lot of other friends. :( You shouldn’t feel bad for me, though. I do have other friends, just not the kind I want to hang out with this weekend.

If you are one of those other friends, don’t feel bad for yourself either! I like you and all, but this weekend I needed a guy friend (cause it wouldn’t really do to go out with a girl/friend while my wife was 100 miles away) and I needed someone I could just completely relax with and be myself. Someone with whom I’m really comfortable.

You might be a girl, or you might be someone with whom I still have to be a little reserved. Or maybe you just live really far away and only keep up with me on the internet or phone. In that case, you shouldn’t feel bad either, cause I’m not driving to California, or Maryland, or Florida, or New York, or wherever you live.

Or maybe I don’t like you.

It’s possible…
